D&D: Open Grave’s Brain in a Jar
For D&D’s Open Grave: Secrets of the Undead, I had the unique opportunity to design of its creatures; for this assignment, I chose one of my favorite gothic monsters, the brain in a jar:
From Open Grave: A brain in a jar is the preserved brain of a sinister being who sought to escape death. Through ritual magic and complicated alchemical processes, the brain is kept alive, retaining all the memories and mental faculties of its former host. The creature usually has some malevolent goal that could not be achieved in life, which drove the brain’s former host to take desperate measures to achieve longevity.
R&D’s Bruce Cordell extended the offer to design a creature for the book; I am incredibly grateful to him for the opportunity, and appreciate the help and development of the brain in a jar for it to be published.
